Transforming Churches and Communities through

the Development of Biblical Leaders

We partner with AGAPE --Asociacion Guatemalteca Aerea Para Edification, founded to provide Air Access and Resources to Edify the Evangelical Church in the Remote Regions of Guatemala and Central America

Target Area: Quiche Department, Guatemala

This area of Guatemala has been identified as having the highest rate of poverty and poor living conditions in the country. Our work specifically is in the Ixil Triangle where communities are nestled on the sides of mountains. Most communities are without electricity, homes have dirt floors, lack sanitary conditions, and have open fires for cooking. Scars of the civil war are evident in this region that bore the most intense fighting of the armed conflict that took place from 1960 to 1996.

Needs

In the Ixil Triangle of the Quiche department of Guatemala, the spiritual, physical and educational needs are all great. Although the church provided a haven to gather and seek comfort during the armed conflict, missionaries and trained leaders were forced to flee. It has been stated that over 95% of the churches in this area do not have pastors/leaders with any formal Bible training. The problem is further compounded by insufficient literacy in the adult population. Most churches do not have any special teaching or programs for youth or children due to a lack of training and resources.

AGAPE Programs

Men's Bible Training Program

Our Bible training program for Pastors and Leaders of rural churches provides basic training in Biblical teaching, preaching and evangelism. Training is provided by qualified church leaders and pastors from Guatemala City. An annual conference in Guatemala City for pastors of the rural church is now part of the program.

Discipleship of Church Leaders

Fundamental to the development of church leaders is Biblical discipleship. This program pairs mature Christian leaders from churches in Guatemala City with their Christian brothers in the rural church to disciple, mentor and encourage them in their personal walk with Christ and in their ministry in their churches and communities.

Firm Foundations for Teachers of Children

This is a Chronological Bible training program based on a curriculum developed by New Tribes Mission, 1993. In addition, the teachers learn methods of teaching, make visuals for their lessons, and learn songs and Bible memorization games to teach children God's Word. This program typically takes two years for a student to complete and provides them with a solid foundation in studying and teaching God's Word to children.

Youth Leadership Training

Our youth leadership training program is a two part program targeting specific youth leaders in the rural communities and also providing outreach activities for all the youth. An annual Youth Camp in November has become a much anticipated event as teens representing various churches and communities have a great time of activities and growth in God's Word.

Community Development

Cafe de la Esperanza (Pastor/farmer Coffee Project)

Cafe Esperanza Project grew out of the economic need of our pastor/farmers in our Men's Bible Training Program. They were struggling to provide for their families and also have the time to devout to their churches and training. Our coffee project eliminates some of the middle man costs and has given these pastors a 30 percent increase for their coffee crop. Coffee farming is an incredibly labor intensive process. Through the help of a Christian businessman in Florida who purchases the 100 percent Arabica coffee that our pastor/farmers cultivate, they now have the opportunity to better care for their families and churches.
